This blog is inspired by a recent meeting I had with a friend Neil Marshall, a retired British Army Major General, now Chief Executive of the Forces Pension Society, a non-profit advocate for United Kingdom military service members, active and retired. In its bi-annual journal, “Pennant,” Neil produced an article in the commentary section which reminded me of a key leadership lesson. He begins his commentary with a story, as a lesson, involving a time when he was briefing a senior officer in a routine committee meeting. “No significant change since our session on this topic last week, Sir,” stated Neil.” He believed he had delivered what the boss needed. “Please remind me, Neil, learning by repetition is often the best way for me…,” the officer responded. “It was a polite way of saying he’d completely forgotten what we had discussed previously,” shared Neil. “Been there, done that,” I thought, as I read the piece…
