“What’s the plan?” I’ve been asked this numerous times. I’ve also asked it of people numerous times. When a leader asks this of a subordinate, he or she is looking for specific things. First and foremost, a leader wants to confirm that there is in fact a method to get something done and that a subordinate leader or team has thought through the steps, timings, and logistics (to name a few) of accomplishing a task. If installing a deck for a client, a leader will want to know how it will be accomplished. If you are the person asked this question, you’ll want to be prepared to answer thoroughly and succinctly to give your leader confidence that you will see the task through. Here are my battlefield tips.
Be brief and be gone. Some leaders may want to know the details of a plan. If you are serving under such a leader, you should arrange a time to brief them on the plan to give them the full picture. You may want to create some charts to show a graphic image of your plan. Some leaders may want only the highlights to confirm that you have firm grasp on accomplishing the task.
