Can we pump the brakes for a moment? It feels like this time of year flies by faster than any other. Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s represent (or ought to) a time of peace, reflection, family, rest, and recuperation. These holidays, along with the other federal and religious holidays throughout the year, are also opportunities for leaders and their people to take a needed break. A time to reconnect, rest, and take stock. It’s also a chance for leaders to show their teams what it looks like to truly step back.
Not every profession allows for a holiday slowdown; military, healthcare, and first responders come to mind. But for most of us, the world quiets down a little during the holidays. I’ve made the mistake of ignoring that quiet before. I kept working, convinced the ship couldn’t sail without me, while everyone else unplugged and recharged. There’s a lesson in that loneliness.
I’ll admit, it’s not easy to step away. Sometimes we feel guilt. Sometimes we think we’re too essential to take a break. But here’s what I’ve learned: you’re not helping anyone by running on empty. Leadership isn’t about being everywhere all the time. It’s about setting the tone and trusting others to carry the weight when you step back.
