QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Each year thousands of Americans, like you, are saying “Yes” to saving the life of a friend, colleague, sibling, or neighbor.
As a QPR-trained Gatekeeper you will learn to:
1. – Recognize the warning signs of suicide
2. – Know how to offer hope
3. – Know how to get help and save a life
Length of training one hour and 30 minutes Participants will receive additional resource information and a certificate following this training.
About our trainer: Monica Kramer McConkey, Rural Mental Health Specialist, and LPC Monica has 25 years of experience in the behavioral health field as a counselor, program supervisor, and administrator. She has a Master’s Degree in Counseling and is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Minnesota. Her focus throughout her career has been to increase access to, and remove the stigma often attached to mental health services in rural underserved areas. Monica grew up on a farm in northwestern Minnesota and has intimate understanding of the dynamics leading to farm stress and its impact on farm families. She currently works as one of two Ag Mental Health Specialists in Minnesota providing support to farmers/ranchers and their families. Monica also travels throughout the country educating and speaking on rural mental health and resilience through her business Eyes on the Horizon Consulting, LLC.
After you are trained you are eligible to join our monthly FVC QPR and Mental Health Awareness Debrief meeting for people who have participated in FVC QPR training. These sessions are optional and are an opportunity for you to have your questions answered, review information that you may not remember, or discuss stress management and suicide prevention with fellow participants and our rural mental health specialist, Monica McConkey. Our September meeting will be held September 26 and you will receive the meeting link invitation once you are trained.
This opportunity is part of the Farmer Veteran Coalition Mental Health Awareness Project. FVC has received a four-year Mental Health Awareness Training Grant from the Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). We are excited to be the recipients of this award so that we can increase our work in the mental well-being of our members and Veterans in general.
